THE DISTRIBUTED ENERGY SHOW, 12TH & 13TH MARCH 2025, NEC, BIRMINGHAM

28/10/2021

Exhibitor Spotlight: Powerstar

What distributed energy technologies do you specialise in?

At Powerstar, we manufacture technologies to support businesses with their specific energy challenges, with the core technologies being Voltage Regulation, low-loss Distribution Transformers, Battery Energy Storage Systems, and Microgrid Control Systems.

The Behind-the-Meter (BtM) battery energy storage systems (BESS) are the heart of our specialisation, particularly to provide site-wide power resilience with ultra-fast switching technology, plus smart management of multiple power flows. Our comprehensive and innovative Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) technologies provide you with full protection from power disruptions alongside the flexibility and utility offered by a battery storage system. Our solutions are supplemented by intelligent power management software that ensures your site uses electricity more intelligently and efficiently.

Please explain how the technology works and what are the benefits of it?

The UK is facing growing concerns surrounding our security of supply as inflexible, distributed generation places additional strain on both distribution networks and our ability to balance generation with demand. Powerstar’s solutions provide instantaneous, site-wide UPS that ensures your profitability, productivity and safety are protected from the growing risk of power disruption. At the same time, it can be used in a range of flexible ways, including bolstering the performance of any on-site generation, buffering high demand technologies such as rapid EV charging to reduce your reliance on your grid connection, improving energy efficiency, reducing energy costs, and more.

Voltage regulation can be installed quickly without disruption to your day-to-day activities. Once in place, voltage regulation provides your site’s electrical infrastructure with lower, conditioned voltage that reduces your energy consumption, costs, and carbon emissions, and extends the lifespan of your electrical equipment.

With low carbon emission targets set for 2050 by the UK government, what is your company doing to contributing towards this?

Battery storage not only delivers substantial energy efficiency benefits in its own right, but also helps to improve or facilitate a range of other low-carbon technologies. The ability to store electricity from on-site generation, such as solar PV or wind turbines, helps to offset the problems that arise from the inflexible nature of these technologies. While solar doesn’t generate overnight and wind similarly slumps during calm weather, battery storage offers the flexibility to store power when generation conditions are optimal, to be used later when needed.

The shift to electric vehicle fleets is an important step towards net zero, but the high power demands that rapid charging brings with it can be problematic, risking your site surpassing your authorised supply capacity from your grid connection. In some cases, these concerns can even be enough to cause your DNO to deny your application to install EV charging in the first place unless you’re willing to pay large fees to increase your capacity from the grid. By utilising a battery, EV chargers can draw from stored energy when needed to replace or supplement power directly from the grid.

If attendees should know one thing about your company and experience, what would it be?

We celebrated our 20th anniversary in 2021, and have built a market-leading reputation for quality, expertise and an ability to deliver a bespoke solution that seamlessly integrates with a customer’s existing infrastructure. Our dedicated research and development team work continually to refine and expand our range of technology solutions. We have also developed leading appraisal and project feasibility capabilities through the application of digital twins and real-time modelling, allowing your proposed power infrastructure project to demonstrate proof of concept before installation even begins.

What has been your organisation’s biggest achievement in date?

After starting out as an energy consultancy and then transitioning into manufacturing with the success of our voltage regulation technologies, we have now successfully transitioned once again to better meet the changing needs of our customers. Today, Powerstar is a leading provider of behind-the-meter power resilience solutions, providing customers with the peace of mind that their sites and operations will not be negatively impacted by power disruption, using technology that also delivers substantial sustainability improvements and reductions to your power costs. This ability to continually progress and innovate, to better serve our customers and solve their challenges, is our greatest achievement.

What will you be showcasing at your stand at The Distributed Energy Show?

Our team will be at the Distributed Energy Show to showcase our Resilience+ proposition. This is the ability of our technologies to deliver efficient, site-wide, UPS protection while simultaneously providing a host of additional functionality that helps our customers to achieve their specific energy goals and priorities in the face of net zero carbon targets. This is one of the main benefits that differentiates our innovative technology from traditional UPS systems.

Who are you hoping to meet at The Distributed Energy Show?

We are looking to engage with energy end users across a broad range of sectors. While areas such as manufacturing, healthcare and data centres are already aware of the need for better power resilience, the steadily growing risk of power disruption means that it should be an energy management priority for almost any business.  Even those that already have UPS systems protecting their critical operations, the need to meet strict carbon reduction targets means these systems may no longer be conducive to reaching net zero carbon.

We are also keen to meet with potential partner companies and consultants that we can work with to deliver best-in-class technology solutions to their customers.
